My issue of the day: long-term sports policies

For a long period of time, starting from the 1988 Seoul Olympics, sports has helped Korea to raise its national prestige. Over the course of nearly 3 decades, various efforts in the field of sports were made to keep the development of the national image. The 2002 World Cup, Yuna Kim, Taehwan Park, Chanho Park, Jisung Park, and many other successes rocketed Korea from a little bit of land that neighbors the world's last remaining communist nation, to a rising star in the world of sports.
After the success of the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup and various other international tournaments, many people have been talking about the "progress" that Korea has made in the sports. However, although it may seem that we are succeeding, these are just temporary victories won by luck, sheer determination and willpower. As we have seen in the recent 0-4 thrashing of the national soccer team by Croatia and numerous other failures in sports, the lack of support and interest for non-popular sports, corruption in even the most popular sports and a system that always wants fast results are all the reasons why this so-called "progress" is a mere illusion and misconception.
